Main directions:

– Development of a modern classification of El Nino events based on a temporal and spatial approach;

– Study of El Nino responses to the Atlantic-European region;

– Search for the trigger mechanism of El Nino and the study of the possibilities of forecasting the phenomenon;

– Application of neural network technologies for modeling and compiling long-term (1-5 months) forecasts of climatic characteristics based on global long-range ocean-atmosphere system connections.

MAIN AREAS OF WORK:

– study of climate variability in the ocean-atmosphere system;

– study of the processes of dynamic and thermal interaction of the atmosphere and the ocean;

–study of changes in wave processes in the coastal areas of the Black Sea.

– study of mesoscale processes in the atmosphere of the Black Sea region

– using the results of fundamental climate research to solve applied problems in the field of environmental management

THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH:

The main purpose of the Laboratory of large-scale ocean-atmosphere interaction and climate change is to study the global processes of large-scale interaction in the ocean-atmosphere system and their manifestations in the regional variability of atmospheric circulation parameters, hydrometeorological fields, wind-wave conditions in the coastal regions of the sea, as well as subsequent research of an applied nature for the Black Sea region.

RESULTS OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH:

The schemes of cyclone trajectories in different phases of the Pacific Decadal and Atlantic multi-decadal oscillations are obtained. With a positive phase of the TDO, storm tracks shift to the north of Europe, with a negative one – to the south, covering the Mediterranean-Black Sea region.

Based on hierarchical cluster analysis by the Ward method, an objective spatio-temporal classification of El Nino events was performed. Two types of phenomena were identified: the eastern spring and the central autumn and their characteristic features were revealed. The first type is characterized by the intensification of the negative temperature anomaly off the coast of South America and its subsequent spread in a westerly direction. The beginning of these events falls on the spring season and the beginning of summer. They reach their maximum phase in October-December. The second, autumn central type is characterized by the fact that in the center of the Pacific Ocean, both the intensification of warm ATPO and the localization of this anomaly in the phase of maximum development are noted. The beginning of the phenomenon is timed to autumn, and the maximum phase is reached in the period from November to January. (Lubkov et al., 2017).

The study of the cold episode of El Niño – Southern Oscillation (La Niña events), as the main signal in the system of interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean on an interannual scale, which has a significant impact on the state of the climate and the environment. The La Niña events were isolated from various reconstructed TPO data and classified for the first time by intensity, duration (Voskresenskaya, Marchukova, 2015) and spatial distribution of the cold anomaly in the equatorial zone of the Pacific Ocean (Voskresenskaya, Marchukova, 2017). Using the hierarchical method of cluster analysis and the HadISST data array, two main types of La Niña were obtained – East Pacific and Central Pacific (Voskresenskaya, Marchukova, 2017). In the East Pacific type of La Niña events, the maximum negative anomaly of ocean surface temperature during the mature phase is located in the eastern equatorial part, and in the Central Pacific – in the central equatorial part.

Seasonal changes in anticyclonic activity (frequency, depth and area) in the Black Sea–Mediterranean region and blocking anticyclones (frequency, number of days with blocking conditions) in the European region were analyzed on the basis of NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data for the period 1948-2013. An increase in the frequency of anticyclones and blocking anticyclones in the winter season and their decrease in the summer season was found (Voskresenskaya E. et al., 2016; Voskresenskaya, Kovalenko, 2016). Blocking anticyclones over the European region can cause extreme air temperatures (ETS) in the Black Sea region. Therefore, linear trends in the characteristics of temperature extremes by season were also analyzed. It was found that the values of ETS increase both in the winter and in the summer season; at the same time, the number of days with extreme temperatures decreases in winter and increases in summer (Bardin et al., 2016).

The characteristics of high-pressure and extreme air temperature systems are characterized by interannual-inter-decade fluctuations caused by large-scale climatic processes in the ocean-atmosphere system. The manifestations of the North Atlantic oscillation and different types of El Nino events, as well as the Atlantic multi-decade oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation in the parameters of anticyclonic activity (including blocking anticyclones), as well as in temperature extremes are studied. It has been established that the positive phase of the SAC (Voskresenskaya E. et al., 2016), the positive phase of TDO is accompanied by an increase in the frequency of winter anticyclones (Voskresenskaya et al., 2014), as well as a decrease in the threshold value of ETV and frequency in the Black Sea region. In (Voskresenskaya, Kovalenko, 2016), the features of changes in blocking anticyclones and air temperature anomalies due to different types of El Nino events are described in detail. It was found that changes in the parameters of anticyclones in different phases of AMO in the Black Sea region are statistically insignificant.

Using different criteria (absolute and relative thresholds, concentration index), extreme precipitation on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula and southern Russia was identified (Vyshkvarkova E. et al., 2018). Their temporal variability in the XX – early XXI centuries has been studied . The manifestations of large-scale processes in the ocean-atmosphere system of interannual and inter–decennial scales (North Atlantic oscillation, El Nino -Southern oscillation, Pacific decadal oscillation, Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation) in the parameters of extreme precipitation on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula are studied. It was found that the negative phase of the TDO is accompanied by an increase in the unevenness of precipitation and the number of days with extreme precipitation in the winter season. It was revealed that the unevenness of precipitation and the number of days with extreme precipitation are higher in the positive phase of AMO in the winter season.

RESULTS OF APPLIED RESEARCH:

The combined effect of the Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation on the yield of winter wheat has been studied.

Together with colleagues from the Institute of the All-Russian National Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking “Magarach” of the Russian Academy of Sciences, microclimatic zoning of certain areas of the Crimean Peninsula was carried out for the rational placement of grape plantations, since for the development of industrial viticulture, the main attention should be paid to establishing the nature of the influence of agro-climatic factors on the vital activity and fruiting of plants, as well as the search for ways of rational using this influence to increase production efficiency, the solution

The main principle of the scientifically based placement of grape plantations is the adaptation of the industrial assortment of grapes to the agro-climatic and soil resources of a particular cultivation region, taking into account special technologies that satisfy the chosen direction of the use of grown crops. For example (in the figure) microclimatic zoning of the Western Foothill-Primorsky district of Crimea.

The second applied direction is the study of the recreational attractiveness of the resorts of the Mediterranean and Black Seas based on the calculation of bioclimatic indicators. These studies are conducted jointly with colleagues from the Order of the Red Banner of Labor Nikitsky Botanical Garden – National Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. These results are the basis for creating practical recommendations for different groups of recreants to choose the optimal conditions of the resort and the time of its visit.

PROMISING AREAS OF RESEARCH:

– study of global processes in the ocean-atmosphere system in order to predict their occurrence;

– study of regional responses of global processes of the ocean-atmosphere system in anomalies of climate and natural environment of the Black Sea region;

– using the results of fundamental climate research to solve applied problems in the field of environmental management.
